Sustainable Fashion
Let's talk about an ever growing problem of fast fashion. Fast fashion brands produce cheap and disposable trendy clothes at a quick pace. They also copy the designs and ideas of smaller brands or runway models and then produce them as their own in abundance. Therefore it is called ‘fast’ since it isn't going to stay in your closet for a long time. Every single year 80-150 billion items of clothing are produced!🤯
‘Well who cares about the fabric when I am getting cheap, trendy clothes which I am just going to wear a couple of times and then throw it out. After all, trends keep on changing. Hail the lord! 🙏This is exactly what I needed’ This is what we all will think deep down and this attitude is the problem.💀
Zara and H&M are the two biggest producers of fast fashion and Shein, Forever 21,Topshop are no exceptions.
Here are some Ways to be sustainable.
Stop impulsive shopping.🛒 Stop buying things you don't need just because they are on sale and are cheap💰. Most importantly Don't consider shopping to be a stress buster. Let's be real, even you know that those outfits will be on the gram in a second after which you will feel like you don't have any more clothes to wear. The average American buys at least 64 items of clothes each year, half of which is worn 3 times or less.😤
Repeat your clothes trust me it is not against the law🙅, and please don't consider yourself to be a fashionista if you don't know how to rock your clothes in different ways. Well in that case I am a fashionista😜 (just joking). Did you know that you all have to wear your clothes at least 30 times to compensate for the environmental cost of the item.
The best way to dispose of clothes is not to donate them, because donation centres only donate 85% of the items and the rest are usually burnt. However you can sell them, pass them down to your family. Start a thrifting business🤑 or simply swap your clothes with friends or rent items for special occasions, nothing can be easier than these. The ones which are not wearable at all can be turned into dusters, simple bags, scarves or maybe headbands for which you can look up a tutorial.☺
It is estimated that by 2050 global clothing sales could more than triple.😱 In 2015 textile production created more greenhouse gases than all international and maritime shipping combined.🚢 So If you have a high budget why not choose ‘quality over quantity’ it might sound cliche but it is true😶. Do you know if all of us bought only one used item instead of ‘new’ it could save nearly 2.8kg of Carbon Dioxide emissions which is equal to removing half a million cars off the road for a whole year!!!😵
Now if you see me shopping in H&M don't hold a grudge against me for doing something contrary to what I have penned down here🖉📑. All I am asking you all is to try and implement these simple practices in your life or just wear your clothing items for 9 months longer before throwing it since it can reduce your carbon footprint for that item by 30%!!!😳. You all might be seeing climate change play its part this year specifically, with rarely any rains in the monsoon in few areas, with floods in Maharashtra and parts of Europe. Most importantly the heatwave in Canada. I hope this blog widens your eyes 👀on this subject. Thank you!
